AMF on Raising Kids in America

[Mr.] Shipman looked at the young beauty at his breakfast table in silent wonder. He knew that she had been a woman for a good while now, and today [Kelly's 18th birthday] would make it official. Once again he fought down his panic and his fear at the terrible world she was about to enter, where he could no longer protect her. In the America of this day, to love a child meant quiet, lifelong terror.
